An elaborate scheme linked a business in Kennesaw to people across the country.

Shawn Smith is an employee of MC Granite Countertops.

He said he and other employees had started receiving phone calls from people requesting checks with the company’s name on them.

Smith and others quickly learned that crooks allegedly got hold of checks with the company’s name on them and sent them to people.

Smith said he gets more than 20 calls a day about the checks.

“If you’re going to put so much effort into something, why not do something legitimate?” Smith said.

The crooks reportedly told people to deposit checks that amounted to thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

“They were like, ‘Deposit that amount, withdraw that amount, and send me that amount to confirm you got it, and the rest is yours,” Smith said.

Once the company informed the bank of the fraudulent check, the bank would seize the money.

“So unfortunately someone just gave someone $ 500 of their own money,” Smith said.

Smith said the crooks sent around $ 200,000 in checks, but the company was able to recover the money.

He said he felt for the other victims of this scam.

They were just desperate people in desperate situations who thought they had received a blessing, but in the end it was a scam, ”Smith said. “It’s sad and it’s cruel. It’s just cruel to do that to people.
